Corn Stocks Down 5 Percent from December 2017 Soybean Stocks Up 18 Percent All Wheat Stocks Up 7 Percent Corn stored in all positions on December 1, 2018 totaled 12.0 billion bushels, down 5 percent from December 1, 2017. Of the total stocks, 7.45 billion bushels are stored on farms, down 4 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 4.50 billion bushels, are down 7 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2018 indicated disappearance is 4.61 billion bushels, compared with 4.34 billion bushels during the same period last year. Soybeans stored in all positions on December 1, 2018 totaled 3.74 billion bushels, up 18 percent from December 1, 2017. Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 1.94 billion bushels, up 30 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 1.80 billion bushels, are up 7 percent from last December. Indicated disappearance for September - November 2018 totaled 1.25 billion bushels, down 20 percent from the same period a year earlier. All wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2018 totaled 2.00 billion bushels, up 7 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 504 million bushels, up 28 percent from last December. Off-farm stocks, at 1.50 billion bushels, are up 1 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2018 indicated disappearance is 390 million bushels, 1 percent below the same period a year earlier. Durum wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2018 totaled 83.6 million bushels, up 49 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 46.7 million bushels, are up 52 percent from December 1, 2017. Off-farm stocks totaled 36.9 million bushels, up 46 percent from a year ago. The September - November 2018 indicated disappearance of 6.45 million bushels is 36 percent below the same period a year earlier. Barley stored in all positions on December 1, 2018 totaled 153 million bushels, down 4 percent from December 1, 2017. On-farm stocks are estimated at 72.0 million bushels, 3 percent below a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 80.8 million bushels, are 4 percent below December 2017. The September - November 2018 indicated disappearance is 22.1 million bushels, up 6 percent from the same period a year earlier. Oats stored in all positions on December 1, 2018 totaled 67.2 million bushels, up 1 percent from the stocks on December 1, 2017. Of the total stocks on hand, 25.4 million bushels are stored on farms, up 9 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 41.8 million bushels, down 3 percent from the previous year. Indicated disappearance during September - November 2018 totaled 7.54 million bushels. Grain sorghum stored in all positions on December 1, 2018 totaled 246 million bushels, up 8 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 36.8 million bushels, are up 9 percent from December 1 last year. Off-farm stocks, at 210 million bushels, are up 8 percent from a year earlier. The September - November 2018 indicated disappearance from all positions is 154 million bushels, down 9 percent from the same period in 2017. Pulse crops stored in all positions on December 1, 2018 are: dry edible peas, 10.3 million cwt, up 8 percent from a year ago; lentils, 5.85 million cwt, up 40 percent from December 1 last year; Austrian winter peas, 180 thousand cwt, down 23 percent from a year earlier; all chickpeas, 6.09 million cwt, up 132 percent from December 1, 2017; small chickpeas, 1.66 million cwt, up 64 percent from a year earlier; and large chickpeas, 4.43 million cwt, up 174 percent from the same period in 2017. On-Farm Grain Storage Capacity Up 1 Percent from Last Year The United States on-farm storage capacity totaled 13.5 billion bushels on December 1, 2018, up 1 percent from the December 1, 2017 estimate. Iowa continues to lead all States with 2.10 billion bushels of on-farm storage capacity followed by Minnesota with 1.55 billion bushels. Other major States include Illinois with 1.48 billion bushels, Nebraska with 1.20 billion bushels, North Dakota with 915 million bushels, and Indiana with 860 million bushels of on-farm storage capacity. These six States account for 60 percent of the Nation's on-farm storage capacity. On-farm grain storage capacity includes all bins, cribs, sheds, and other structures located on farms that are normally used to store whole grains, oilseeds, or pulse crops. Off-Farm Grain Storage Capacity and Facilities Capacity of off-farm commercial grain storage in the United States totaled 11.5 billion bushels on December 1, 2018, up 2 percent from the December 1, 2017 total. The largest increase occurred in Kansas where an additional 50.0 million bushels of capacity was added since December 1, 2017. Other notable increases were shown in Minnesota, where capacity increased 40.0 million bushels, and Iowa which was up 30.0 million bushels from 2017. Illinois and Iowa remained the two largest off-farm storage capacity States during 2018 with both at 1.50 billion bushels. Kansas was the third largest followed by Nebraska and Minnesota. These five States accounted for 51 percent of the Nation's off-farm storage capacity on December 1, 2018. Off-farm grain storage capacity includes all elevators, warehouses, terminals, merchant mills, other storage, and oilseed crushers which store whole grains, soybeans, canola, flaxseed, mustard seed, safflower, sunflower, rapeseed, Austrian winter peas, dry edible peas, lentils, and chickpeas/garbanzo beans. Capacity data exclude facilities used to store only rice or peanuts, oilseed crushers processing only cottonseed or peanuts, tobacco warehouses, seed warehouses, and storage facilities that handle only dry edible beans, other than chickpeas/garbanzo beans. Off-farm storage facilities totaled 8,482 on December 1, 2018, down 1 percent from the December 1, 2017 estimate. States with the largest number of facilities include Iowa with 870, Illinois with 840, Kansas with 715, Minnesota with 565, and Nebraska with 487. Separate surveys are conducted to obtain the on-farm and off-farm estimates. The on-farm stocks survey is a probability survey that includes a sample of approximately 82,000 farm operators selected from a list of producers that ensures all operations in the United States have a chance to be selected. These producers are asked to provide the total quantities of grain stored on their operations as of December 1, 2018. This includes all whole grains and oilseeds stored whether for feed, seed, or sale as well as any stored under a government program. The off-farm stocks survey is an enumeration of all known commercial grain storage facilities. This includes approximately 8,500 facilities with 11.5 billion bushels of storage capacity. An effort is made to obtain a report from all facilities. Reports of stock holdings are normally received from operations covering about 90 percent of the capacity. Estimates are made for missing facilities to make the survey complete. Estimation Procedures: On-farm and off-farm survey data are reviewed at the State and National levels for reasonableness, consistency with historical estimates, and current crop size. After estimates are made for on-farm and off-farm stocks, the totals of these two are combined and evaluated using the balance sheet approach. This method utilizes other sources of data to check the reasonableness of the stocks estimates. Estimates of production, imports, exports, crushings, millings, and all other recorded uses of grains and oilseeds are reviewed to make sure beginning stocks, production, utilization, and ending stocks are within reasonable balance and present the best possible estimate of stocks. Revision Policy: On-farm and off-farm stocks are subject to revision the quarter following initial publication and again in the following December 1 Grain Stocks report published in January each year. Revisions can be made when late reports are received, errors are detected in reporting and calculations, and production estimates are revised. Estimates will also be reviewed following the 5-year Census of Agriculture. No revisions to these years will be made after that date. Reliability: Reliability of the on-farm and off-farm stocks must be treated separately because the survey designs for the two surveys are very different. The on-farm stocks estimates are subject to sampling variability because all operations holding on-farm stocks are not included in the sample. This variability, as measured by the relative standard error at the United States level, is approximately 1.7 percent for corn, 1.7 percent for soybeans, and 3.0 percent for all wheat. This means that chances are approximately 95 out of 100 that survey estimates for stocks will be within plus or minus 3.4 percent for corn, 3.4 percent for soybeans, and 6.0 percent for all wheat of the value that could be developed by averaging the estimates produced from all possible samples selected from the same population and surveyed using the same procedures. The relative standard errors for sorghum, barley, and oats are 8.8, 5.8, and 4.3 percent, respectively. Survey indications are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. Off-farm, as well as on-farm stocks, are subject to these types of errors. These errors cannot be measured directly, but they are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
