Snap Beans: Contracted production of snap beans is forecast at 806,920 tons, up 2 percent from last year. Contracted harvested area is down 1 percent, but yield is up 0.10 tons per acre. In Oregon, the snap bean crop was reported in good condition. In West Central Michigan, dry weather throughout July led to many fields being irrigated. However, stands were reported to be in good condition. In Illinois, planting was delayed due to sporadic rainfall across the State. In Indiana, the snap bean crop was reported to be in good condition. In Minnesota, harvest was delayed due to unseasonably cool summer temperatures and limited rainfall during the growing season. In New York, excessive rainfall accompanied by cool nights resulted in reduced yields. In Wisconsin, snap beans are progressing at a slow pace due to cool temperatures. Sweet Corn: Contracted sweet corn production is forecast at 3.16 million tons, up 13 percent from last year. An increase of 9 percent in contracted harvested area is accompanied by an increase in yield of 0.37 ton per acre from 2008. In Minnesota, favorable weather conditions allowed planting to proceed on schedule. Planting was nearly complete by the end of June. Harvest was reported as 16 percent complete as of August 16. In Washington, conditions were mostly hot and dry during the early summer season. However, water supplies are reported as adequate and the crop is also reported to be in good condition. Oregon's sweet corn crop is reported to be in good condition. In Wisconsin, harvest was delayed due to cool temperatures. Tomatoes: Contracted tomato production is forecast at 14.1 million tons, up 16 percent from last year. An increase of 11 percent in contracted harvested area is accompanied by a yield increase of 1.73 tons per acre. In California, the season got off to a good start due to dry spring conditions. Warm weather during July benefited crop progress. In Ohio, harvest was 15 percent complete by mid-August. In Michigan, harvest began in early August and the crop progressed well throughout the growing season. Fruit size was reported to be larger than normal due to cool temperatures during June and July. Indiana=s processing tomatoes are reported to be in fair to good condition.
