Bureau of the Census Cotton Information Cotton consumed during the month ending August 31, 1996, amounted to 842,312 bales. Cotton on hand in consuming establishments at the end of August was 580,185 bales, and the total in public storage and compresses was 1,322,513 bales. Active consuming cotton spindles totaled 2,648,000, and the quantity of domestic cotton exported, excluding linters, was 144,600 bales.
