Bureau of the Census Cotton Information Cotton consumed during the month ending October 31, 1996, amounted to 834,217 bales. Cotton on hand in consuming establishments at the end of October was 562,362 bales, and the total in public storage and in compresses was 6,617,754 bales. Active consuming cotton spindles totaled 2,567,000, and the quantity of domestic cotton exported, excluding linters, was 259,200 bales.
