Bureau of the Census Cotton Information Cotton consumed during the month ending August 31, 1997, amounted to 868,874 bales. Cotton on hand in consuming establishments at the end of August was 661,667 bales, and the total in public storage and compresses was 2,387,496 bales. Active consuming cotton spindles totaled 2,613,000, and the quantity of domestic cotton exported, excluding linters, was 399,100 bales.
