U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 1 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.70 million head on June 1, 1998. The inventory was 1 percent above June 1, 1997 and 13 percent above June 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during May totaled 2.03 million, 9 percent above 1997 and 30 percent above 1996. Net placements were 1.94 million. During May, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 305,000, 600-699 pounds were 392,000, 700-799 pounds were 707,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 627,000. Marketings of fed cattle during May totaled 1.95 million, 5 percent below both 1997 and 1996. Other disappearance totaled 93,000 during May, 21 percent below 1997 but 11 percent above 1996. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Up 1 Percent Cattle on feed June 1, 1998, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 8.29 million, up 1 percent from the previous year and 14 percent above June 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during May totaled 1.74 million, 8 percent above 1997 and 34 percent above 1996. Marketings during May totaled 1.68 million, 6 percent below 1997 and 4 percent below 1996. Other disappearance during May was 65,000 head, 19 percent below 1997 but 12 percent above 1996.
