Cattle on Feed National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 6 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.16 million head on January 1, 1998. The inventory was 6 percent above January 1, 1997 and 8 percent above January 1, 1996. The inventory included 6.80 million steers and steer calves, up 6 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 61 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.30 million head, up 6 percent from 1997. Placements in feedlots during December totaled 1.55 million, 8 percent below 1996 and 10 percent below 1995. Net placements were 1.47 million. During December, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 366,000, 600-699 pounds were 519,000, 700-799 pounds were 390,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 277,000. Marketings of fed cattle during December totaled 1.75 million, 4 percent above 1996 and 5 percent above 1995. Other disappearance totaled 85,000 during December, 1 percent below 1996 but 25 percent above 1995. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Up 6 Percent Cattle on feed January 1, 1998, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.46 million, up 6 percent from the previous year and 9 percent above January 1, 1996. The inventory included 5.80 million steers and steer calves, up 7 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 61 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.62 million head, up 5 percent from 1997. Placements in feedlots during December totaled 1.30 million, 8 percent below 1996 and 10 percent below 1995. Marketings during December totaled 1.50 million, 6 percent above both 1996 and 1995. Other disappearance during December was 68,000 head, the same as 1996 but 31 percent above 1995. U.S. All Cattle on Feed Up 3 Percent Cattle on feed January 1, 1998, from all feedlots in the United States, totaled 13.6 million, up 3 percent from the 13.2 million on January 1, 1997 and 5 percent above January 1, 1996.
