Placement and marketing estimates refer to the month of January. Cattle on Feed Down 4 Percent in 7 Monthly States Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the 7 States preparing monthly estimates totaled 8.87 million head, down 4 percent from a year ago and down 3 percent from February 1, 1993. Placements in feedlots during January totaled 1.73 million, 12 percent above 1994 and 5 percent above 1993. Net placements of 1.64 million for January were up 11 percent from last year and 8 percent above 1993. Marketings during January totaled 1.64 million, up 2 percent from a year ago and 7 percent above 1993. Other disappearance during January was 88,000 head, 24 percent above last year but 32 percent below 1993. Cattle on Feed in 1,000+ Capacity Feedlots Down 2 Percent Cattle and calves on feed February 1, 1995, for the 7 States in the feedlots with 1,000 or more head capacity totaled 7.92 million head, down 2 percent from the previous year. The inventory in the 1,000+ capacity feedlots accounted for 89.3 percent of the total inventory. This report contains the number of feedlots, January 1 inventory, and annual marketings by size group.
