U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 2 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.16 million head on July 1, 1998. The inventory was 2 percent above July 1, 1997 and 17 percent above July 1, 1996. The inventory included 5.45 million steers and steer calves, up 1 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 59 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.68 million head, up 5 percent from 1997. Placements in feedlots during June totaled 1.56 million, 8 percent above 1997 and 20 percent above 1996. Net placements were 1.49 million. During June, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 262,000, 600-699 pounds were 374,000, 700-799 pounds were 487,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 440,000. Marketings of fed cattle during June totaled 2.03 million, slightly below 1997 but 2 percent above 1996. Other disappearance totaled 72,000 during June, 20 percent above 1997 and 3 percent above 1996. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Up 2 Percent Cattle on feed July 1, 1998, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 7.83 million, up 2 percent from the previous year and 19 percent above July 1, 1996. The inventory included 4.61 million steers and steer calves, down slightly from the previous year. This group accounted for 59 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.19 million head, up 5 percent from 1997. Placements in feedlots during June totaled 1.31 million, 7 percent above 1997 and 23 percent above 1996. Marketings during June totaled 1.73 million, slightly below 1997 but 2 percent above 1996. Other disappearance during June was 51,000 head, 16 percent above 1997 and 9 percent above 1996. U.S. All Cattle on Feed Up 1 Percent Cattle on feed July 1, 1998, from all feedlots in the United States, totaled 11.0 million, up 1 percent from the 10.9 million on July 1, 1997 and 12 percent above July 1, 1996.
