U.S. Cattle on Feed Down 2 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.75 million head on October 1, 1998. The inventory was 2 percent below October 1, 1997 but 10 percent above October 1, 1996. The inventory included 5.95 million steers and steer calves, down 2 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 61 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.77 million head, down 3 percent from 1997. Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.65 million, 2 percent below 1997 and slightly below 1996. Net placements were 2.59 million. During September, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 433,000, 600-699 pounds were 479,000, 700-799 pounds were 796,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 941,000. Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 1.86 million, 3 percent above 1997 and 18 percent above 1996. Other disappearance totaled 61,000 during September, 15 percent above 1997 but 13 percent below 1996. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Down 2 Percent Cattle on feed October 1, 1998, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 8.38 million, down 2 percent from the previous year but 12 percent above October 1, 1996. The inventory included 5.09 million steers and steer calves, down 1 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 61 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.27 million head, down 3 percent from 1997. Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.25 million, 1 percent below 1997 and 1 percent below 1996. Marketings during September totaled 1.58 million, 3 percent above 1997 and 18 percent above 1996. Other disappearance during September was 51,000 head, 21 percent above 1997 but the same as 1996.
