U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 1 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.37 million head on March 1, 1998. The inventory was 1 percent above March 1, 1997 and 7 percent above March 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.45 million, 19 percent below 1997 and 15 percent below 1996. Net placements were 1.39 million. During February, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 210,000, 600-699 pounds were 434,000, 700-799 pounds were 501,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 309,000. Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 1.81 million, slightly above 1997 but 2 percent below 1996. Other disappearance totaled 69,000 during February, 13 percent above 1997 but 4 percent below 1996. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Up 1 Percent Cattle on feed March 1, 1998, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 8.84 million, up 1 percent from the previous year and 8 percent above March 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.25 million, 19 percent below 1997 and 13 percent below 1996. Marketings during February totaled 1.54 million, 1 percent below 1997 and slightly below 1996. Other disappearance during February was 56,000 head, 33 percent above 1997 and 8 percent above 1996. Cattle on Feed Annual Size Group Estimates Published for the first time on page 7 are the number of feedlots, inventory, and annual marketings for 1996 and 1997 for the top eleven farmer feeder (feedlots of less than 1,000 head capacity) States. Republished from the February release are data for the major States with capacity of 1,000 or more head. These two breakouts provide data users with State level data that covers more than 90 percent of U.S. cattle on feed total inventory and cattle marketed. Also, republished from the February release are the combined U.S. totals for all feedlots. This information will be published in the February release next year.
