U.S. Cattle on Feed Down 1 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.02 million head on September 1, 1998. The inventory was 1 percent below September 1, 1997 but 15 percent above September 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during August totaled 2.03 million, 16 percent below 1997 and 10 percent below 1996. Net placements were 1.98 million. During August, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 378,000, 600-699 pounds were 406,000, 700-799 pounds were 630,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 617,000. Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 1.94 million, 4 percent below 1997 but 1 percent above 1996. The year-to-year relationship between fed cattle marketings and commercial slaughter was affected by an increase in cattle imported from Canada that are going directly to slaughter. Other disappearance totaled 52,000 during August, 16 percent above 1997 and 4 percent above 1996. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Down 1 Percent Cattle on feed September 1, 1998, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 7.75 million, down 1 percent from the previous year but 17 percent above September 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during August totaled 1.75 million, 17 percent below 1997 and 11 percent below 1996. Marketings during August totaled 1.67 million, 5 percent below 1997 but 1 percent above 1996. Other disappearance during August was 42,000 head, the same as 1997 but 14 percent above 1996.
