July Weather Summary Highlights: July precipitation was patchy across the Plains and Midwest, generally reducing soil moisture availability for rangeland, pastures, and rain-fed summer crops. Since portions of the Plains were already contending with drought-related impacts as the month began, July's hotter-and drier-than-normal regime (in most areas) led to locally significant crop stress. By August 2, twenty-nine percent of the Nation's sorghum crop was rated in very poor to poor condition, up from 13 percent just 5 weeks earlier, on June 28. Midwestern corn and soybeans were more resilient, with the central and eastern Corn Belt escaping extreme heat. Still, less than two-thirds of the Nation's corn (61 percent) and soybeans (63 percent) were rated in good to excellent condition on August 2, well below the values- 73 and 69 percent, respectively-observed the same time a year ago. In early August, Statewide rangeland and pastures were rated at least 70 percent very poor to poor in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Nationally, only one-quarter of the rangeland and pastures were rated in good to excellent condition on August 2, while 46 percent were rated very poor to poor. Rangeland and pasture conditions were last lower at this time of year in 2022, when 49 percent were rated very poor to poor on July 31. Additionally, acute soil moisture shortages were observed across the western half of the United States. In the 17 States from the Pacific Coast to the Plains, only California reported a Statewide value less than 50 percent very short to short on August 2. On the same date, topsoil moisture rated very short to short had crept back to 50 percent or higher in the Delta States of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, drought coverage across the Lower 48 States hovered between 45 and 48 percent during July. Although National coverage fell approximately 15 percentage points (from 63 to 48 percent) between April 21 and July 28, significant drought existed at the end of July in parts of the mid-South, upper Great Lakes region, and Atlantic Coast States, as well as an area extending from the Pacific Coast to the Plains. July wildfires in northern Minnesota charred some 80,000 acres of mostly forested land, with smoke from those incidents mixing with Canadian wildfire smoke to blanket the north-central and northeastern United States for several mid-month days. Showers associated with the North American monsoon, although late in arriving, eventually curbed the Southwestern wildfire threat. Before rain arrived, however, the Aspen Acres Fire-southwest of Pueblo, Colorado-scorched nearly 102,000 acres of vegetation and destroyed more than 915 structures. In neighboring Utah, the Babylon Fire-southwest of Monticello-consumed more than 107,000 acres. As Southwestern showers intensified during the second half of July, wildfire activity shifted into the Northwest. At the end of July, at least 50 actively burning Northwestern wildfires were resulting in widespread reductions in visibility, smoky skies, and poor air quality. At that time, a half dozen of the active Northwestern fires-five in Oregon and one in Washington-had burned more than 100,000 acres of vegetation, with the Big Grass Fire near Jordan Valley, Oregon, having torched nearly 360,000 acres and having burned into southwestern Idaho. Nationally, wildfires during the first 7 months of 2026 charred almost 5.2 million acres of vegetation, nearly 140 percent of the 10-year average of 3.7 million. Near- or above-normal temperatures dominated the country during July. The core area of anomalous heat, with monthly temperatures averaging at least 3 to 6 degrees F above normal, stretched from the northern Intermountain West to the northern Plains and far upper Midwest. Memorably hot weather across the northern Plains and neighboring regions peaked on July 12, with all-time station records being set in locations such as Mile City, Montana (115 degrees F); Billings, Montana (111 degrees F); Sheridan, Wyoming (109 degrees F); and Salt Lake City, Utah (109 degrees F). A separate area of unusual July heat affected southern California. Meanwhile, monsoon-related cloudiness and showers helped to suppress mid- to late-month temperatures in parts of the Southwest, while a stormy spell lowered temperatures in south-central Texas and environs. Slightly above-normal readings covered much of the South, East, and lower Midwest, aside from cooler-than-normal conditions along and near the northern Atlantic Coast. The only Atlantic Basin tropical system of the month was Tropical Storm Bertha, a heavily sheared cyclone that developed west of Florida and twice made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast-on July 22 in southeastern Louisiana and July 23 near the Texas-Louisiana border. Most of Bertha's significant rainfall remained offshore. However, non-tropical showers caused localized flooding during July in several areas. Some of the most widespread flooding occurred around the middle of the month in south-central Texas, affecting some of the same areas struck by the devastating Independence Day 2025 flash flood. Farther east, episodic heavy showers eased or eradicated drought in the middle and northern Atlantic States, with some of the heaviest rain (locally 4 to 10 inches) falling on July 28-30 from eastern New York into parts of southern New England. Elsewhere, heavy showers associated with the monsoon circulation resulted in localized Southwestern washouts, including a slot-canyon flood on July 17 near Bicknell, Utah, that claimed five lives. July Agricultural Summary July brought mixed weather conditions across key United States agricultural regions. Temperatures were near normal across much of the Atlantic Coast States, the Ohio Valley, and the southern and central Great Plains. In contrast, much of the northern Rockies and the Plains experienced above-normal temperatures, with monthly averages running 2 to 8°F above normal. The Pacific Northwest saw near-normal temperatures, while portions of the Southwest were warmer than normal. Meanwhile, drier-than-normal conditions prevailed across much of the Pacific Northwest and parts of the middle and lower Mississippi Valley, as well as the northern and central Plains. Precipitation across the Great Plains, the upper and middle Mississippi Valley, and the Ohio Valley was highly variable, with some areas receiving above-normal amounts while others were drier than normal. Portions of Texas recorded significant rainfall, with some locations receiving up to four times their normal monthly totals. Sixteen percent of the Nation's corn was silking by July 5, one percentage point behind last year but 2 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Statistical Methodology Survey procedures: Objective yield and farm operator surveys were conducted between July 25 and August 5 to gather information on expected yields as of August 1. The objective yield survey for winter wheat was conducted in 10 States that account for 70 percent of the 2025 winter wheat production. Farm operators selected for the objective yield survey were interviewed to update previously reported acreage data and seek permission to randomly locate two sample plots in selected fields for the objective yield survey. The counts made within each sample plot depend on the crop and the maturity of that crop. In all cases, the number of plants is recorded along with other measurements that provide information to forecast the number of heads and their weight. The counts are used with similar data from previous years to develop a projected biological yield. The average harvesting loss is subtracted to obtain a net yield. The plots are revisited each month until crop maturity when the fruit are harvested and weighed. After the farm operator has harvested the sample field, another plot is sampled to obtain current year harvesting loss. The objective yield survey will be conducted for corn, cotton, and soybeans beginning in September. The farm operator survey was conducted primarily by telephone with some use of mail, internet, and personal interviews. Approximately 14,500 producers were interviewed during the survey period and asked questions about probable yield. These growers will continue to be surveyed throughout the growing season to provide indications of average yields. Estimating procedures: The Agricultural Statistics Board (ASB) reviews multiple data sources at the National and State level, including USDA administrative acreage data, satellite imagery, and objective yield and grower reported data. All data were reviewed for reasonableness and consistency with historical estimates. The data were also reviewed considering weather patterns and crop progress compared with previous months and previous years. Revision policy: The August 1 production forecast will not be revised; instead, a new forecast will be made each month throughout the growing season. End-of-season estimates are made after harvest. At the end of the marketing season, a balance sheet is calculated using carryover stocks, production, imports, exports, millings, feeding, and ending stocks. Revisions are then made if the balance sheet relationships or other administrative data warrant changes. Estimates of acres for barley, corn, cotton, dry edible beans, oats, peanuts, rice, sorghum, soybeans, sugarbeets, and wheat are subject to revision in the August Crop Production report. Acres for chickpeas, corn, cotton, dry edible peas, lentils, peanuts, rice, sorghum, soybeans, and sugarbeets are subject to revision in the September Crop Production report each year. Barley, oats, rye, and wheat end-of-season estimates are published in the Small Grains Annual Summary report at the end of September. Canola, dry edible beans, and sunflower acres are subject to revision in the October Crop Production report. Potato acres are subject to revision in the November Crop Production report. End-of-season estimates for all other row crops are published in the Annual Crop Production Summary in January. Revisions to planted acres will only be made when either special survey data, administrative data, such as Farm Service Agency certified acreage data, or remote sensing data are available. Harvested acres may be revised any time a production forecast is made if there is sufficient data indicating that the intended harvested area has changed since the last forecast. Reliability: To assist users in evaluating the reliability of the August 1 production forecast, the "Root Mean Square Error," a statistical measure based on past performance, is computed. The deviation between the August 1 production forecast and the final estimate is expressed as a percentage of the final estimate. The average of the squared percentage deviations for the latest 20-year period is computed. The square root of the average becomes statistically the "Root Mean Square Error." Probability statements can be made concerning expected differences in the current forecast relative to the final end-of-season estimate, assuming that factors affecting this year's forecast are not different from those influencing recent years. For example, the "Root Mean Square Error" for the August 1 corn for grain production forecast is 3.5 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current production forecast will not be above or below the final estimate by more than 3.5 percent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90 percent confidence level) that the difference will not exceed 6.0 percent. Also, shown in the following table is a 20-year record for selected crops of the differences between the August 1 forecast and the final estimate. Using corn again as an example, changes between the August 1 forecast and the final estimate during the last 20 years have averaged 345 million bushels, ranging from 5 million bushels to 1.19 billion bushels.
