Industrial hemp in the open: Planted area for the Nation in 2025 for all utilizations totaled 49,267 acres, up 9 percent from 2024. The value of hemp production in the open for the United States totaled $646 million, up 53 percent from last year. Area harvested for all purposes in the open totaled 43,707 acres, up 34 percent from 2024. Floral hemp in the open: United States floral hemp production grown in the open for 2025 was estimated at 33.2 million pounds, up 60 percent from 2024. Area harvested for floral hemp in the open in the United States was estimated at 16,880 acres, up 43 percent from last season. The average yield for 2025 floral hemp in the open was estimated at 1,966 pounds per acre, up 209 pounds from last year. The value of floral hemp grown in the open totaled $574 million, up 49 percent from 2024. Grain hemp in the open: National production of hemp grown in the open for grain in 2025 totaled 7.26 million pounds, up 112 percent from 2024. Area harvested for hemp grown in the open for grain in the United States was estimated at 7,515 acres, up 55 percent from last season. The average yield for 2025 hemp grown in the open for grain was estimated at 966 pounds per acre, up 264 pounds from last year. The value of hemp grown in the open for grain totaled $8.09 million, up 209 percent from 2024. Fiber hemp in the open: In 2025, production of hemp grown in the open for fiber was estimated at 67.3 million pounds, up 11 percent from 2024. Area harvested for hemp grown in the open for fiber in the United States was estimated at 21,693 acres, up 14 percent from last season. The average yield for 2025 hemp grown in the open for fiber was estimated at 3,104 pounds per acre, down 83 pounds from last year. The value of hemp grown in the open for fiber totaled $13.5 million, down 13 percent from 2024. Seed hemp in the open: Production of hemp grown in the open for seed in 2025 was estimated at 2.03 million pounds, up 190 percent from 2024. Area harvested for hemp grown in the open for seed in the United States was estimated at 3,537 acres, up 64 percent from last season. The average yield for 2025 hemp grown in the open for seed was estimated at 573 pounds per acre, up 250 pounds from last year. The value of hemp grown in the open for seed totaled $49.7 million, up 193 percent from 2024. Hemp under protection: In 2025, hemp growers used 3.99 million square feet under protection for production, up 13 percent from 2024. The 2025 value of hemp production under protection in the United States totaled $93.3 million, up 225 percent from last year. Hemp clones and transplants grown under protection in the Nation for 2025 totaled 1.08 million plants, up 203 percent from 2024. The value of hemp clones and transplants grown under protection totaled $1.96 million, up 339 percent from last year. United States production of floral hemp grown under protection was estimated at 168,285 pounds, up 241 percent from 2024. The value of floral hemp grown under protection totaled $81.6 million, up 354 percent from last year. Hemp grown under protection for seed totaled 1,880 pounds, down 20 percent from 2024. The value of hemp grown under protection for seed totaled $9.75 million, down 5 percent from last year. Extracting: Extracting is a process that draws essential oils from raw floral hemp material. Feminized seed: Feminized seeds are seeds that have been modified to produce female plants. Floral hemp: Hemp used for the extraction of essential oils from plant resin, such as cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), or other phytocannabinoids. Floral hemp includes smokable hemp. Hand trimming: Trimming hemp buds removes the leaves around the buds from the flowers. Harvested not sold: The difference between total production and utilized production. This is hemp that was harvested from the field, but was not sold for various reasons including but not limited to poor quality, market conditions, marketing restrictions, or other reasons. Hemp destroyed due to high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is not considered harvested. Non-feminized seed: Non-feminized seeds produce both male and female plants. Production contract: An agreement setting terms, conditions, and fees to be paid by the contractor to operations for the production of hemp. Retting: Retting is a process involving the use of moisture and microbes to break down the chemical bonds (pectin) holding the hemp stem together, enabling easier separation of the bast from the woody core (the hurd or shiv). Total production: The quantity of a crop that was actually harvested and left the field. Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold, the quantities used at home to make processed items, or held in storage. It is the difference between total production and harvested not sold. Yield per acre: Total production divided by area harvested. Statistical Methodology Survey Procedures: The Hemp Production and Disposition Inquiry was used to collect acreage, yield, production, and price data from February to March 2026 for the 2025 crop year. Telephone follow-up of mail survey non-response is used to ensure adequate coverage. The survey is conducted in all 50 states and is a census of all known hemp growing operations. Additional details about the survey methodology can be found in the Hemp Methodology and Quality Measures report. Estimating Procedures: Information obtained from the Hemp Production and Disposition Inquiry along with federal administrative data is used to establish estimates of acres, yield, total production, utilized production, price, and value. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates. Revision Policy: All hemp estimates are subject to revision the following year based on a thorough review of all available data. Estimates will also be reviewed following the 5-year Census of Agriculture, which is an exhaustive data collection effort of all known farm operations across the United States. The information gathered from the Census of Agriculture provides the last chance for revision. Reliability: Survey results are subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be measured directly but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
