HDR2012000170170510951500CTGN NARRATIVE Cotton Ginnings 1994: A total of 19.1 million running bales were ginned during the 1994 season, 22 percent above 1993 ginnings of 15.7 million bales. Although it was the largest crop on record, ginnings exceeded 1993's pace as high-speed gins kept pace with harvest progress, and there were few weather related harvest delays. There were 1,306 active cotton gins in 1994, down from the 1,364 gins operating the previous year. Volume per gin continues to increase as the number of gins decreases, and 466 gins processed between 15,000 bales and 40,000 bales, up from 324 gins in 1993. There were 92 gins processing more than 40,000 bales, compared to 60 gins last year. Cotton, 1994 Final: All cotton production in the United States totaled a record high 19.7 million bales in 1994, 22 percent above 1993's production. Upland cotton production, at 19.3 million bales, was 23 percent greater than the previous year, while American-Pima production totaled 337,700 bales, down 9 percent from 1993. The area planted to all cotton totaled 13.7 million acres, up 2 percent from 1993, and harvested area, at 13.3 million acres was up 4 percent from the previous year. Abandonment during 1994 totaled 3 percent compared with 5 percent in 1993. Yields for the U.S. averaged a record high 708 pounds per acre. Eight States had record high yields. The Delta States' 1994 crop recovered from the 1993 production which suffered from drought, extreme high temperatures, and insect infestations. Plantings were delayed but eventually equalled the 5-year average pace. Boll development was rapid, with high counts and weights. Region yields averaged 818 pounds, up 271 pounds from a year earlier, and production totaled 6.92 million bales, up 48 percent from 1993. Arkansas had a record high yield of 877 pounds per harvested acre, and Louisiana had the largest production on record. Missouri and Tennessee had record high yields of 856 and 726 pounds respectively, and record productions. Production in the Southeast increased 90 percent from the previous year's drought crop, to 3.49 million bales. Harvested acreage was up 26 percent from 1993, and regional yields at 821 pounds, were 275 pounds higher than one year earlier. Record high yields were recorded in Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolina's. Florida and Virginia also produced their largest crops. The Western States Upland cotton production decreased 6 percent from 1993 to 3.57 million bales. Although harvested acreage increased 3 percent from one year earlier, regional yields decreased 113 pounds from 1993. California's yield declined 149 pounds from 1993, as early season rainfall caused delayed plantings, and the number and weight of bolls were some of the lowest during the previous 10 years. The Texas-Oklahoma Upland production, at 5.16 million bales, was down 4 percent from 1993, due to dry conditions in West Texas and in Oklahoma. Texas' producers harvested 94 percent of their acreage, compared to only 91 percent the previous year. Yields averaged 458 pounds per harvested acre in Texas, a 26 pound decrease from one year earlier. Cottonseed: Cottonseed production in 1994 totaled 7.60 million tons, the third largest crop on record and up 20 percent from 1993. HDR2012000170170510951500NXT RLSE DATE&EEO STMNT.
