Cr Pr 2-3 (00) United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Small Grains 2000 Summary September 2000 All wheat production totaled 2.24 billion bushels in 2000, down 3 percent from both the last forecast and 1999. The decline from the last forecast is the result of both acreage and yield decreases. Area harvested for grain is down 2 percent from the last forecast and 1 percent from last year. The U.S. yield is 42.1 bushels per acre, down 0.2 and 0.6 bushels from the last forecast and last season, respectively. Oats: Production for the 2000 crop year is estimated at 150 million bushels, 2 percent below the August forecast, but 3 percent above the 1999 production. The estimated yield, at 64.4 bushels per acre, is 2.1 bushels above the August forecast and 4.8 bushels higher than last year. Area harvested for grain in 2000 is 2.33 million acres, 5 percent below the August forecast and 1999. This continues the steady downward trend and breaks last year's record as the smallest acreage harvested for grain on record. Compared with the August forecast, reductions in acres harvested for grain due to drought in Texas, Nebraska, and South Dakota, more than offset higher yields on remaining acres. Barley: Production in 2000 was estimated at 320 million bushels, up 3 percent from the last forecast and 14 percent above last year's estimate. Average yield per acre, at 61.4 bushels, was up 2.2 bushels from 1999. The area harvested for grain was estimated at 5.21 million acres, 10 percent above a year ago. This report was approved on September 29, 2000. Acting Secretary of Agriculture Joseph W. Glauber Agricultural Statistics Board Chairperson Frederic A. These estimates are based on the latest varietal or class survey data available. These end-of-season percentages will be used during the 2001 forecast season. However, if an unusual situation significantly distorts a State's usual distribution, then updated percentages are used during the forecasts. Warm, dry weather at the beginning of spring allowed planting to rapidly advance in the Corn Belt, especially in Iowa, where nearly half of the acreage was seeded by April 1. Seeding progressed well ahead of normal in most of the major oat-producing States through April. In Ohio and Pennsylvania, planting accelerated in late April. By May 1, most of the acreage was seeded in the Corn Belt and progress was gaining momentum in the upper Mississippi Valley. At the end of May, planting was virtually complete across the Corn Belt, but lagged behind the 5-year average in North Dakota and Minnesota. Early planting, warm weather, and timely rain promoted rapid emergence and early growth in the Corn Belt and Great Lakes region. In the upper Mississippi Valley and northern Great Plains, adequate moisture supplies and seasonal temperatures aided rapid germination in late May and by the end of the month, nearly all of the Nation's oat acreage was emerged. Development continued ahead of the 5-year average through June and on July 2, seventy-nine percent of the crop was headed in the 8 major oat-producing States, compared with the average of 60 percent. About three-fourths of the acreage was rated good to excellent throughout July. Harvest began early and progressed ahead of the 5-year average, with only brief rain delays. In Iowa and Nebraska, the harvest was nearly complete by the end of July and most of the Nation's remaining oat acreage was harvested by the end of August. Barley: Production in 2000 was estimated at 320 million bushels, up 3 percent from the September forecast and 14 percent above last year's estimate. Average yield per acre, at 61.4 bushels, was up 2.2 bushels from 1999. The area harvested for grain is estimated at 5.21 million acres, 10 percent above a year ago. This year's harvested acreage is the second lowest on record, following last year's record low. North Dakota continued to rank as the top barley producing State, followed by Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Minnesota. These five States produced over three-fourths of the 2000 barley crop. The barley harvest was 92 percent complete by September 3, ahead of the 5-year average of 76 percent. Winter Wheat: The 2000 winter wheat production is estimated at 1.56 billion bushels. This is down 2 percent from the August forecast and 8 percent below 1999. The U.S. yield dropped 0.4 bushels from August to 44.6 bushels per acre, 3.2 bushels below last year's yield. Acreage for grain is estimated at 35.0 million acres, down 1 percent from both last month and last year. Most of the decrease in grain area from August comes from Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. Hard Red Winter production is down 5 percent from the last forecast, and 20 percent below 1999. The large decline from last year is due to both acreage and yield declines as a result of poor growing conditions. Yields were generally unchanged or lower than the last forecast. The exception is Texas, where the yield is up 1 bushel from August 1, however production is down due to a reduction in harvested acres. Soft Red Winter production is virtually unchanged from the last forecast, but up 4 percent from last year. Yields are generally higher or unchanged from what was projected on August 1. Arkansas, Missouri, and Pennsylvania are the exceptions, where yields declined slightly. Record yields are recorded in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. White Winter production is up 4 percent from the last forecast and 30 percent above last year's below average crop. Yields in Idaho and Washington turned out better than expected and are new records. Washington growers harvested a good quality crop with test weights above last year. Idaho had excellent irrigated yields. The Michigan yield is 1 bushel lower than the August 1 forecast, but still a record high level. Wet weather at harvest time in New York resulted in lower than expected yields. Other Spring Wheat: Production in 2000 is estimated at 561 million bushels, down 5 percent from the last forecast, but 12 percent more than in 1999. Harvested area is now 14.5 million acres, down 3 percent from the last forecast and 2 percent from last year. The U.S. yield is 38.6 bushels per acre, down 0.6 bushels from the last forecast, but 4.5 bushels higher than in 1999. Harvest was nearly complete by mid-September. Washington's average yield is up from the last forecast where both growing conditions and harvest conditions were ideal. Yields declined in Idaho and Oregon. Nevada, South Dakota, and Wisconsin recorded record yields. Hard Red Spring State yields changed slightly from September. Growers in the northern regions of North Dakota reported sprout damage due to excessive moisture. Objective Yield survey data showed plant populations at record high levels in Minnesota and North Dakota, and near average in Montana. Final weight per head was above average in Minnesota and North Dakota, and below average in Montana. Durum Wheat: Durum production for 2000 totaled 116 million bushels, down 2 percent from September 1, but 16 percent higher than last year. Grain area now totals 3.67 million acres, up 3 percent from last year. The U.S. yield, at 31.5 bushels per acre is up 1.9 bushels from the last forecast and 3.7 bushels above last year's yield. North Dakota's Durum harvest was only 89 percent complete by September 24, four points behind the 5-year average. Sprouting and other moisture related damage has lowered the quality of the remaining wheat. Rye: Production for 2000 is estimated at 8.62 million bushels. This is the second lowest production on record and 22 percent below 1999. Harvested area was 302,000 acres, down 21 percent from a year ago. The U.S. yield, at 28.5 bushels per acre, is down 0.3 bushel from last season. The "Small Grains 2001 Summary" report will be released at 8:30 a.m. on September 28, 2001.
