MD_DA230 Fluid Milk and Cream - Central U.S. Report 28 - Released on July 11, 2019 In the Midwest, spot milk is less available this week partly due to the heat. Milk prices have increased a bit. Some contacts mentioned that they can hardly find loads at $1 under Class. However, current milk price range within the Midwest is $1.75 under to $0.50 over Class. Surprisingly, spot offers were less than expected during the past holiday. This is most likely the result of a combination of lower milk output in the past weeks and higher milk requests. The expectation is that milk volumes will get tighter moving forward into the summer. Bottled milk sales are somewhat mixed. Nevertheless, several buyers report taking more loads this week. Cream is available to buyers, and multiples are slowly picking up after the holiday. Delayed and/or prevented planting, along with less than normal first crop yield on forages, remain a concern in the Midwest. As the result, more farmers are working with their crop insurance providers on alternative planting options to lower the risks related to prevented planting. The second cutting of alfalfa is taking place in some areas as many producers take advantage of the break from the recent rainy weather pattern. Row crop conditions are variable with corn heights ranging from less than 1 foot to over 3 feet tall. In the Upper Midwest, soybean acreage is developing slowly with incomplete canopies in many areas.
