MD_DA230 Fluid Milk and Cream - Central U.S. Report 36 - Released on September 07, 2023 Available milk supplies continue to be stretched thin week to week. Directionally, southern states' dairy farmers continue to contend with temperatures in the 90s and some days in the triple digits. Now that schools have begun in earnest throughout the entire region, the peak season of Class I milk usage is here. A number of cheesemakers say their phones have gone cold, as milk offers have markedly ebbed from just a month ago. Spot prices into Class III facilities ranged from $1 to $2.50 over Class III in the region. Condensed skim availability has dwindled somewhat, as well. Cream supplies were available early in the week, as was expected with the holiday weekend. However, cream suppliers and end users agree that inventories have already begun to tighten up and are expected to do so for the near-term. Butter makers, though, had plentiful offers at multiples agreeable to busier churning rates following some extra plant downtime over the weekend. Corn conditions are mixed, but dryness continues to pervade swaths of the upper Midwest. Some farmers are prepping for an early harvest, of both soybeans and corn, due to the extended length of dry weather in a number of Midwestern states.
