MD_DA230 Fluid Milk and Cream - Central U.S. Report 43 - Released on October 24, 2019 Milk output reports are mixed. Dairy farm contacts say even with fewer cows year to year, milk efficiency and component levels are, in some cases, better this year than last, which mirrors national reports on milk output. Silage stocks are also mixed, but dairy farmers report similar year to year numbers, as some Wisconsin farmers report bunkers being well stocked. Milk prices are giving a boost to farm incomes. Naturally, farmers report prices at these points will need to continue for a substantial period in order to offset some of the losses from the previous four years. Milk into cheese vats ranged from Class to $1.75 over Class III. Most of those prices fell between $1 to $1.75 over, but some regional cheesemakers found deals. Cream availability shifted downward this week. Manufacturers of dips and cream cheese, holiday retail foci, are clearing more cream. Butter makers say cream is on the cusp of being out of reach. Cream handlers suggest 2020 contracting is underway. Most reports are that prices are similar to those of 2019, or slightly higher. Precipitation is delaying harvest progress in much of the corn belt. Farmers are reporting inconsistent corn yields this harvest season. Expectations are questionable, planting season was later for a lot of farmers, as epic rainfall/flooding occurred during the planting season this spring.
