HDR1012000110070921951500POTATOES HDR2012000110070921951500POTATO INTRODUCTION Potatoes This publication presents final 1994 estimates of acreage, yield per acre, production, farm disposition, season average price, value, and utilization of sales including processing with historic comparisons. First of the month (December through May) stocks of potatoes for the 15 major fall producing States are also included. Production, disposition, and value data for Alaska are shown separately. These final estimates are based on information furnished by crop reporters, processors, and cooperating State or Federal Agencies. The various sources include: Market News Service rail and truck shipments and unloads, Federal- State inspections--and miscellaneous data available through marketing programs. Price estimates represent average returns to growers for all uses and for all methods of sale. These prices are applied to total production to compute value of production and to the quantity sold to compute value of sales. Some unsold potatoes contribute to the value of production; including farm use for seed, feed, home use, and loss. The United States season average price is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities sold. Potato production, utilization, and value of sales in each State have been classified by seasonal group according to the period when the largest supplies are usually harvested. The four seasonal groups are as follows: Season Usual Time of Harvest Winter January through March Spring April through June Summer July through September Fall September through November Crop year is associated with the calendar year in which harvest is accomplished. Seasons are not fixed dates but are approximations because there is some overlapping of harvest before or after the specified season. Generally, the marketing season closely follows the harvesting season except for the fall crop where marketing from storage may extend through July of the following year. Thus, the marketing year for fall potatoes is generally the start of harvest through July of the following year. HDR2012000110070921951500POTATO HIGHLIGHTS Potato Growers Produce Fourth Straight Record High Crop Total 1994 potato production is estimated at a record high 468 million cwt, 9 percent above a year earlier and 10 percent above 1992. Harvested area, at 1.38 million acres, was up 5 percent from the last two years. The average yield hit a record high 338 cwt per acre, up 12 cwt from a year ago and 15 cwt above 1992. These are the fourth consecutive record highs for yield and production. Winter production in 1994 dropped 7 percent from a year earlier, spring increased 15 percent, summer and fall potatoes gained 9 percent each. The growing season was robust for fall potatoes with an early start, a long growing period, and nearly ideal harvest season. Eight Central and Western States produced record large fall potato crops and several record high yields. There were, however, some pockets of flood and blight damage in Central and Eastern States. Value of production was estimated at $2.60 billion from the 1994 crop, down 2 percent from a year earlier but 11 percent above 1992. The average price was $5.58 per cwt compared with $6.17 from the 1993 potato crop. Sales from the 1994 potato crop totaled 425 million cwt, up 8 percent from 1993 and 10 percent above 1992. Non-sales accounted for 43.2 million cwt of 1994 potatoes, up 20 percent from the previous year and 9 percent more than 1992. Typically, 91 percent of potatoes produced are sold (based on the past 5-year average). The other 9 percent are either lost (shrinkage and loss) or used for seed, home use and livestock feed on farms where grown. In the 1994 season, farmers sold 90.8 percent of their crop and kept or lost 9.2 percent. Shrinkage and loss was the second highest on record (after 1985), estimated at 37.2 million cwt, 24 percent above 1993 and 10 percent above 1992. Livestock feed and home use totaled 1.21 million cwt, up 8 percent. Growers kept 4.74 million cwt for seed on their own farms, down 1 percent from the previous year. Processors used a record high 261 million cwt of potatoes, up 8 percent from 1993 and 14 percent above the 1992 crop usage. Table stock totaled 135 million cwt, up 9 percent from last year, while other sales (seed and livestock feed) of 28.7 million cwt were up 7 percent. Chip potato use totaled 49.5 million cwt, up 1 percent from a year earlier. Freezing potatoes totaled a record high 163 million cwt, a jump of 11 percent; while dehydrating claimed a record high 41.4 million cwt, a gained 1 percent. Canning use totaled 5.39 million cwt, up 24 percent. Starch, flour and other products were made from 2.2 million cwt of potatoes, a gain of 29 percent. HDR2012000110070921951500POTATOES: UTILIZ.
