One hundredweight is equal to 100 pounds. Ton: Standard unit for processed vegetables. One ton is equal to 2,000 pounds. Total Production: The quantity of a crop that was actually harvested and left the field. Utilization: These estimates refer to the first utilization, not necessarily the final utilization of a crop. For example, fresh market vegetables include some vegetables that may be later processed for sauce, soups, and preserves. Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold for fresh market, sold for processing, the quantities used at home to make processed items, or held in storage. Price and Value Definitions Price: Represents the Marketing Year Average (MYA) price. For a crop sold for both fresh market and processing, the (MYA) is a weighted average of the fresh and processing prices. Prices for fresh vegetables are the average prices producers receive at the point of first sale. This is commonly referred to as the average price as sold. Since the point of first sale is not the same for all producers, prices for the various methods of sale are weighted by the proportionate quantity sold. For example, if in a given State part of the vegetables are sold free on board (F.O.B.) packed by growers, part are sold as bulk vegetables at the packinghouse door, and some are sold retail at roadside stands, the fresh vegetable average price as sold is a weighted average of the average price for each method of sale. F.O.B. packed prices are adjusted to an equivalent incoming packinghouse door price by subtracting all costs that accumulate between the incoming packinghouse door and the F.O.B. price. These costs include grading, packing, inspecting fees, selling, and other costs. Prices for vegetables sold for processing are equivalent returns for vegetables delivered to the processing plant door. Value: Crop value estimates in this report cover the marketing season or crop year and should not be confused with cash receipts which are based on a calendar year. A sample of vegetable growers in the open are surveyed in major producing States in the program. The Vegetable Sampling Frame consists of farm operators with at least 0.1 acre on the list frame for specific vegetable commodities. The Multivariate Probability Proportional to Size (MPPS) sampling design is used to select the sample. The sample does not have an area component. Data are collected by mail out questionnaires and personal interviews. Telephone follow-up of mail survey non-respondents is used to ensure adequate coverage. Due to the variable nature of the vegetable industry, mail lists are updated to ensure complete coverage. Estimation Procedures: Information obtained from the vegetables grower surveys along with federal administrative data is used to establish estimates of total planted and harvested acres, yield, production, price, and value. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates. Revision Policy: Estimates contained in this report may be revised the following year, if new information is available that would justify a change. Estimates will also be reviewed after data for the 5-year Census of Agriculture are available. No revisions will be made after that date. Reliability: Survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing vegetables are not included in the sample. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be measured directly, but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
