The utilized production totaled 655 million cwt, down 2 percent from 2021. Area harvested in 2022 was 2.14 million acres, down 5 percent from 2021. The top three vegetables, in terms of area harvested, were sweet corn, tomatoes, and snap beans. In terms of total production, the three largest crops were tomatoes, onions, and sweet corn, which combined accounted for 53 percent of the all vegetables total. The value of utilized production for 2022 vegetable crops was $16.5 billion, up 27 percent from the previous year. Tomatoes, onions, and romaine lettuce claimed the highest values, accounting for 30 percent of the utilized value of production when combined. Vegetable Comments Artichokes: Production in 2022 totaled 742,500 cwt, down 6 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 4,500 acres, down 6 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 4,500 acres, was down 6 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $44.6 million, 18 percent below the previous season. Utilized production totaled 742,500 cwt, all of which was for the fresh market. In California, Artichoke growers planted less acres this year when compared to last year. Weather conditions were mixed with dry and wet conditions during the growing season in most of the artichoke producing areas. Asparagus: Production in 2022 totaled 535,400 cwt, down 7 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 15,500 acres, down 7 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 15,000 acres, was down 6 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $65.2 million, down 1 percent from the previous season. Utilized production totaled 534,100 cwt, of which 377,700 cwt was for the fresh market and 7,823 tons for processing. In Michigan, the largest producing State, asparagus season began in May and was in full swing in June. Cooler spring and wet conditions delayed fieldwork. Ideal weather and climate conditions improved later in the growing season, allowing producers to resume planting activities and apply herbicide applications. Asparagus growth rapidly increased, producing excellent quality with a plentiful supply as warm weather conditions continued through harvest. Washington's cold, wet spring delayed planting the 2022 asparagus early season crop. The late-season frosts postponed asparagus harvest, and some growers protected spears from freezing temperatures with insulation. Snap beans: Production in 2022 totaled 14.3 million cwt, down 5 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 164,600 acres, down 7 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 158,200 acres, was also down 7 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $325 million, 24 percent above the previous season. Utilized production totaled 14.2 million cwt, of which 2.21 million cwt was for the fresh market and 601,673 tons for processing. In Wisconsin, the largest producing State, the dry spring conditions and early frost experienced by some producers had minimal impact on the 2022 crop, as the State's yield was the highest on record. In Florida, during the winter and spring months, portions of the State were moderately dry and cool, but as the summer arrived, rainfall increased over most of the State. Although, conditions were dry during the early part of the year, there was still enough precipitation to provide a sufficient amount of moisture for the crop's growth and development. In New York, planting of the crop lagged behind the previous year early on. However, toward the end of the planting season, progress surpassed 2021. Additionally, 96 percent of the crop was harvested by the week ending October 2, well ahead of the previous year's 79 percent. Broccoli: Production in 2022 totaled 12.1 million cwt, down 9 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 96,600 acres, down 5 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 96,400 acres, was also down 5 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $815 million, 18 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 12.1 million cwt, of which 11.7 million cwt was for the fresh market and 19,080 tons for processing. In California, the largest producing state, cooler temperatures in Santa Maria and Salinas Valley, large growing centers for broccoli, have lowered some yields compared with previous seasons. Cabbage: Production in 2022 totaled 22.7 million cwt, up 8 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 57,200 acres, down 2 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 56,100 acres, was also down 2 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $613 million, 27 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 22.7 million cwt, of which 19.3 million cwt was for the fresh market and 167,580 tons for processing. In California, the largest producing State, weather during planting in the fall of 2021 and through head development in 2022 was favorable. No significant pathogen impact on the crop was reported. Production and quality were both reported to be good. Cantaloupes: Production in 2022 totaled 10.7 million cwt, up 7 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 39,400 acres, up 4 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 39,100 acres, was also up 4 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $325 million, up 23 percent from the previous season. Utilized production totaled 10.7 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market. In California, the largest producing State, growing regions experienced drought conditions during the 2022 growing season. Carrots: Production in 2022 totaled 30.5 million cwt, is up slightly from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 63,600 acres, down 7 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 63,200 acres, was down 7 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $1.17 billion, 15 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 30.4 million cwt, of which 23.9 million cwt was for the fresh market and 329,963 tons for processing. In California, the largest producing State, growers planted fewer acres of carrots as California entered the third straight year of a severe drought. Water restrictions, availability, and summer record heat were some of the biggest challenges faced by growers. The season wrapped up with record rainfall, low temperatures, and average yields. Cauliflower: Production in 2022 totaled 8.33 million cwt, up 2 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 40,000 acres, down 11 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 39,900 acres, was down 11 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $546 million, 39 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 8.32 million cwt, of which 7.82 million cwt was for the fresh market and 24,995 tons for processing. In California, the largest producing State, favorable weather was reported during the growing season, resulting in a good crop volume with strong and good sizing and color. Celery: Production in 2022 totaled 12.4 million cwt, down 16 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 23,100 acres, down 18 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 23,000 acres, decreased 17 percent from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $380 million, up 5 percent from previous year. Utilized production for 2022 totaled 12.4 million cwt, down 16 percent from 2021. In California, producers struggled with water and soil-born fungal pathogen (fusarium) this season. Additionally wet weather conditions early in the season slowed producer with planting and crop development. Sweet corn: Production in 2022 totaled 57.2 million cwt, up slightly from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 355,100 acres, down 3 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 340,400 acres, was down 3 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $809 million, 22 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 56.9 million cwt, of which 13.0 million cwt was for the fresh market and 2.20 million tons were for processing. In Minnesota, the largest producing State, many growers were faced with cool, wet conditions and late planting in the spring. Sweet corn yield reports and quality were better than expected, despite adverse planting conditions and an early summer drought during harvest season. Timely rain in the southern portion of the State yielded an exceptional crop, whereas yields were affected by less rain in northern Minnesota. Washington experienced a cold, wet growing season in the spring. The damp weather and excessive water early in the season reduced spring pollination activity, hindering growth and crop development. However, the summer heat and warmer weather before the fall harvest helped to improve and restore damaged crops. The adverse weather impacted sweet corn yields and quality, especially in the Columbia Basin area. Cucumbers: Production in 2022 totaled 13.1 million cwt, down 7 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 88,300 acres, down 3 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 83,500 acres, was down 8 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $287 million, 5 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 13.1 million cwt, of which 3.31 million cwt was for the fresh market and 487,913 tons for processing. In Michigan, the largest producing State, seeding and transplanting began in late May and continued through June. Quality looked good going into mid- summer harvest with some scarring from cucumber beetles. Downy mildew showed up on crops still unharvested through the end of July. Cucumbers from second harvest were largely done in September. Florida, the weather conditions were good during the growing season. There were some reports of frost during mid- season however growers took preventative measures to limit damage. Dry conditions appeared later in the season but there were no indications of significant crop loss. Cucumber crop continued to look good as harvesting came to an end. There were no major issues during cucumber harvesting as disease and pest pressure remained low. However, Florida suffered many acres failed to be harvested due to hurricane Ian. Georgia cucumbers are grown primarily in the southern portion of the state. The conditions were less than ideal that frost on the second weekend of March had an impact on vegetable crops however no major damage was reported for the cucumber crop. Conditions were dryer towards the end of the growing season. There were no reports of disease pressure late in the season as growers were completing harvesting. Garlic: Production in 2022 totaled 4.52 million cwt, up 28 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 26,000 acres, up 5 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 25,800 acres, up 6 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $309 million, 50 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 4.51 million cwt, of which 1.44 million cwt was for the fresh market and 153,510 tons for processing. In California, cold winter and warm temperatures during late spring and early summer resulted in an optimal growing condition for the 2022 garlic crop. Lack of spring rain resulted in excellent crop quality. Honeydew: Production in 2022 totaled 1.83 million cwt, up 12 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 5,900 acres, down 8 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 5,900 acres, was also down 8 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $72.4 million, up 14 percent from the previous season. Utilized production totaled 1.83 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market. In California, most growing regions experienced drought conditions during the 2022 growing season. Head lettuce: Production in 2022 totaled 33.2 million cwt, down 6 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 98,100 acres, down 7 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 97,800 acres, was down 6 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $1.33 billion, 38 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 33.2 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market. In California, the largest producing State, there were lingering effects of a late season freeze in March. As the season began, high temperatures and disease began to affect production. Throughout the season, various disease outbreaks occurred. Supply was affected by weather, water allocation challenges, and the Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV). In Arizona and California, the desert region experienced several days of freezing temperatures in December, causing epidermal blister and peel in some lettuce crops. Leaf lettuce: Production in 2022 totaled 14.1 million cwt, up 13 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 62,000 acres, up 1 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 61,700 acres, was up 1 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $1.25 billion, 90 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 14.1 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market. In California, the largest producing State, the season was plagued with the Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV), which has negatively affected the majority of the Salinas Valley growers. Pythium wilt was also an issue in the region. Dual outbreaks lead to desert region growers beginning harvest earlier than expected to compensate. Overall, the crop's quality was fair. In Arizona and California, the desert region experienced several days of freezing temperatures in December, causing epidermal blister and peel in some lettuce crops. Romaine lettuce: Production in 2022 totaled 25.5 million cwt, down 7 percent from the 2021 total. Planted area was estimated at 88,400 acres, down 7 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 88,100 acres, was down 6 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $1.54 billion, 45 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 25.4 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market. In California, the crop experienced some weather and crop disease-related issues during the season that affected production. Some growers reported large yield losses due to the Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV). In Arizona and California, the desert region experienced several days of freezing temperatures in December, causing epidermal blister and peel in some lettuce crops. Romaine seems to be more susceptible than other varieties of lettuce. Onions: Production in 2022 totaled 64.4 million cwt, down 5 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 129,800 acres, down 6 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 127,200 acres, was down 6 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $1.63 billion, 31 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 63.7 million cwt, of which 43.1 million cwt was for the fresh market and 1.03 million tons were for processing. In California, the largest producing State, growers planted fewer acres than last year due to extended drought conditions and limited availability of irrigation water. The crop was harvested later in the season, and some acres were freeze damaged and affected by Fusarium basal rot, but less widespread than last year. In Washington, harvest conditions were less than ideal this season, but growers harvested a decent crop, and onions moved to storage. This season was challenging to grow onions across the Columbia Basin of Washington due to variable spring conditions and a relatively warm summer. Despite the early-season weather challenges, onions progressed as usual, and the quality was good. Stands were uniform, and most of the cultivars produced bulbs uniform in size and shape. There were fewer colossal onions this year compared to last. There were plenty of jumbos and some mediums, with good yields and size distribution. In March, Oregon onion planting was in full swing. Malheur County's dry conditions were suitable for planting and fieldwork. Growers, with access to wells, irrigated onion fields to help with germination due to low reservoir levels and below-average snowpack from dry weather. Strong, high winds caused considerable soil erosion in some fields. Some seedlings showed immediate damage from freezing temperatures. In Malheur County, scattered areas with severe thunderstorms flooded fields, and strong winds and hail damaged the onion crop. Cooler temperatures continued throughout the region, limiting crop growth and development. Temperatures improved in September, and an early variety of onion harvest began. The warm, dry weather was ideal for fieldwork and made for good harvest conditions with good quality yields and adequate supplies of jumbo and medium. In Idaho, especially throughout Treasure Valley, unfavorable weather conditions and relentless heat during the growing season impact yields. Quality was good to excellent, with more jumbos and mediums and fewer colossal sizes. Green peas: Production in 2022 totaled 5.42 million cwt, up 21 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 125,000 acres, down 5 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 120,300 acres, was down 6 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $96.5 million, 36 percent above the previous season. Utilized production totaled 5.41 million cwt, of which 5,400 cwt was for the fresh market and 270,434 tons for processing. In Minnesota, soil moisture in the spring and early summer were favorable for crop development and leading to increased yield this season. Bell peppers: Production in 2022 totaled 10.4 million cwt, up 7 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 31,700 acres, up 2 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 31,000 acres, was up 2 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $673 million, 45 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 10.4 million cwt, of which 9.19 million cwt was for the fresh market and 59,012 tons for processing. In California, it was a good year overall. There was an increase in planted acreage and overall price. In Georgia, much of the crop grown is in the southwest part of the State. Bell peppers continued to increase in acreage when compared to the previous year. In Michigan, the growing season began in early May as producers began hoop house plantings. Within the month, transplanting and staking were underway, with some tunnel-grown peppers in the early bloom stage. Early peppers were at first flower stage by early June, as stakes were being placed in all fruiting vegetable fields. By month's end, field peppers were just starting to set fruit and size up. August gave way to a busy harvest season, with a diversity of green peppers heading to market. Moderate pest pressure and an increase of misshapen fruit was reported due to high heat at bed formation. Harvest continued smoothly throughout the summer and operators reported a good bell pepper year for the most part. Chile peppers: Production in 2022 totaled 1.75 million cwt, up 4 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 10,000 acres, down 8 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 9,800 acres, was down 8 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $77.1 million, 3 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 1.74 million cwt, of which 318,800 cwt was for the fresh market and 71,220 tons for processing. In California, chili pepper acreage continues to decline. There were no major weather conditions that affected the crop. The growing season dealt with the continued drought. Pumpkins: Production in 2022 totaled 16.5 million cwt, down slightly from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 71,000 acres, down 4 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 67,900 acres, was down 2 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $272 million, 18 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 16.4 million cwt, of which 10.9 million cwt was for the fresh market and 275,230 tons for processing. In Illinois, the largest pumpkin producing State, dry conditions during the most critical growing portion of the crop led to smaller yields than last year. Indiana pumpkin season began in late spring. Widespread drought and above-average temperatures in June slowed pumpkin growth and led to declines in yield in some areas. However, the dryer weather also led to a decrease in disease pressure, and some producers prevented losses by irrigating their fields and by replanting in certain spots. Spinach: Production in 2022 totaled 8.43 million cwt, up 22 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 60,600 acres, up 11 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 60,300 acres, was up 12 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $562 million, 14 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 8.42 million cwt, of which 7.64 million cwt was for the fresh market and 38,657 tons for processing. In California, the largest producing State, growers reported water availability continued to be an issue across the State, especially during high heat waves experienced in the summer months. In Arizona, favorable weather conditions and few insect and disease problems enabled the quality on the crop to be good. Growers experienced the highest yield since 2013. Squash: Production in 2022 totaled 6.13 million cwt, down 11 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 38,700 acres, down 12 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 37,100 acres, was down 13 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $208 million, 3 percent below the previous season. Utilized production totaled 6.07 million cwt, of which 4.93 million cwt was for the fresh market and 57,087 tons for processing. In Michigan, the largest producing State, direct seeding of yellow squash into plastic began in early May, while hoop house grown plants came out at the end of the month. Much of the month of May was dedicated to sowing of early summer squash and zucchini in the Southwest and West Central portions of the State. By June 1, seeding and transplanting were in full swing. Weather had a large effect on the crop during June, with heat related injury and pest pressure becoming evident by the month's end. Harvest was strong through July and August, although continued hot and dry weather resulted in high insect activity forcing producers to increase herbicide applications and irrigation measures to safeguard their crops. By season's end, harvest remained steady through the late summer and early fall. Sweet potatoes: Production in 2022 totaled 25.9 million cwt, down 11 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 133,000 acres, down 14 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 132,200 acres, was down 14 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $598 million down 1 percent from the previous season. Utilized production totaled 25.8 million cwt, of which 18.1 million cwt was for the fresh market and 382,001 tons for processing. In North Carolina, the largest producing State, production went well and with a good crop. Growers faced challenges with a cool planting window and mixed dry and wet seasons. Tomatoes: Production in 2022 totaled 225 million cwt, down 2 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 271,000 acres, down 1 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, estimated at 263,800 acres, was down 2 percent from 2021. The value of the crop totaled $1.78 billion, 18 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 223 million cwt, of which 13.1 million cwt was for the fresh market and 10.5 million tons for processing. In California, most of the growing regions were under extreme and exceptional drought throughout the 2022 season. Due to the lack of rainwater being available to leach the salt below the root zone, salt levels in the soil become elevated when using ground water wells for irrigation. This process can negatively impact the yield. Additionally, this year's crop was impacted by the Beet Curly Top Virus and a new strain of spotted wilt. Temperature swings also played a role in a lower yield for 2022. Florida experienced some frost in early 2022 and some abnormally dry to moderately dry conditions for the season. Still the crop received enough precipitation for adequate growth and development. However, some growers had to replant fields after fall planting, due to flooding from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole. Watermelons: Production in 2022 totaled 32.9 million cwt, down 2 percent from 2021. Planted area was estimated at 96,500 acres, down 5 percent from the previous year. Area harvested was estimated at 93,200 acres, was down 5 percent from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $748 million, 27 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 32.8 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market. In Florida, the largest producing State, some areas reported severe frost early in the season and much of the state experienced dry conditions during the growing season. Definitions of Terms Area harvested: The total vegetable acreage harvested for all purposes (both fresh and processing utilization). Area planted: The total vegetable acreage planted for all purposes (both fresh and processing utilization). Harvested not sold: The difference between total production and utilized production. These are vegetables that were harvested from the field, but were not sold for various reasons including but not limited to poor quality, marketing restrictions, or other reasons. Hundredweight (cwt): The standard unit used for the all yield, all total production, harvested not sold, all utilized production, as well as the fresh market utilized production and fresh market price. One hundredweight is equal to 100 pounds. Ton: Standard unit for processed vegetables. One ton is equal to 2,000 pounds. Total Production: The quantity of a crop that was actually harvested and left the field. Utilization: These estimates refer to the first utilization, not necessarily the final utilization of a crop. For example, fresh market vegetables include some vegetables that may be later processed for sauce, soups, and preserves. Grade-outs for vegetables which are processed are included in the processing quantity. Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold for fresh market, sold for processing, the quantities used at home to make processed items, or held in storage. It is the difference between total production and harvested not sold. Processing: Operations that alter the general state of the commodity, such as canning, cooking, freezing, dehydration, milling, grinding, pasteurization, pickling, juicing, or slicing. Fresh Market: Utilized production that is not processed is considered fresh market. Yield per acre: Total production divided by area harvested. Price and Value Definitions Price: Represents the Marketing Year Average (MYA) price. For a crop sold for both fresh market and processing, the (MYA) is a weighted average of the fresh and processing prices. Prices for fresh vegetables are the average prices producers receive at the point of first sale. This is commonly referred to as the average price as sold. Since the point of first sale is not the same for all producers, prices for the various methods of sale are weighted by the proportionate quantity sold. For example, if in a given State part of the vegetables are sold free on board (F.O.B.) packed by growers, part are sold as bulk vegetables at the packinghouse door, and some are sold retail at roadside stands, the fresh vegetable average price as sold is a weighted average of the average price for each method of sale. F.O.B. packed prices are adjusted to an equivalent incoming packinghouse door price by subtracting all costs that accumulate between the incoming packinghouse door and the F.O.B. price. These costs include grading, packing, inspecting fees, selling, and other costs. Prices for vegetables sold for processing are equivalent returns for vegetables delivered to the processing plant door. Value: Crop value estimates in this report cover the marketing season or crop year and should not be confused with cash receipts which are based on a calendar year. A sample of vegetable growers are surveyed in major producing States in the program. The Vegetable Sampling Frame consists of farm operators with at least 0.1 acre on the list frame for specific vegetable commodities. The Multivariate Probability Proportional to Size (MPPS) sampling design is used to select the sample. The sample does not have an area component. Data are collected by mail out questionnaires and personal interviews. Telephone follow-up of mail survey non-respondents is used to ensure adequate coverage. Due to the variable nature of the vegetable industry, mail lists are updated to ensure complete coverage. Estimation Procedures: Information obtained from the vegetables grower surveys along with federal administrative data is used to establish estimates of total planted and harvested acres, yield, production, price, and value. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates. Revision Policy: End-of-season vegetable estimates are subject to revision the following year based on a thorough review of all available data and are published in the Vegetables Annual Summary. Reliability: Survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing vegetables are not included in the sample. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be measured directly, but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
