This annual release provides acreage, production, and sales data for a variety of organic crop and livestock commodities, as well as information on organic marketing and agricultural practices. Statistics included in this report are value of farms, land, value of sales, amount of crop harvested, production, and inventory. The first organic survey was initiated in 2008 to support an emerging organic industry. The 2008 and 2014 organic surveys were conducted as part of the Census of Agriculture as a Special Study. These data collection efforts surveyed all known certified, exempt, and transitioning organic operations. The 2011 and 2015 organic surveys were conducted in cooperation with the USDA's Risk Management Agency in an effort to expand the number and variety of premium price elections for certified organic crops. The surveys in these years were restricted to only certified organic operations.

National Conservation Practice Adoption Motivations

This annual full-text report presents data on floriculture crops including cut flowers, potted flowering plants, foliage plants, potted herbaceous perennials, annual bedding/garden plants, cut cultivated greens, propagative floriculture material and special Hawaiian crops. The data includes quantity sold, percent of sales at wholesale, wholesale price and value of sales at wholesale for 15 program states and growers having $100,000 or more in sales. Additionally, the number of growers, growing area and operations with hired workers for growers with $10,000 or more in sales is also included in the report.

The survey collects information on organizations that either provide off-farm water for farms or manage groundwater usage on farms. A number of the tables intend to provide a breakdown of the services the organizations provide, the amount of water they work with, and the economic conditions they work under. The upcoming report is a recently renewed follow on for the Irrigation and Water Management Survey.

The National Farmers Market Managers Survey is a survey conducted under an agreement with the Agricultural Marketing Service. AMS uses these data to measure the customer demand of local foods from the Farmer’s Market manager’s perspective, look for potential expansion opportunities, target access to nutritional foods, market nutritional education, measure access to local foods and organic foods, and strengthening community engagement. This survey will be conducted every 5 years.
